About one third of the City's annual budget is funded through property taxes (also called ad valorem, meaning "by value"). Property taxes are calculated based on the assessed value of the property (land value + improvements value - exemptions) mulitiplied by the tax rate.
The assessed value is determined by the Tax Assessor. The tax rate is set and certified by the Hudson County Board of Taxation.
Property taxes are generally due quarterly on Feb. 1, May 1, August 1, and November 1.
