A Message from Mayor Steven M. Fulop Regarding the Impending Tropical Storm

Good evening. This is Mayor Steven Fulop with an important message regarding the impending
tropical storm expected to bring heavy rain and high winds to our area beginning tonight, with
the steadiest and heaviest rainfall impacting our area on Tuesday, August 4th, from about 10am
through 10pm.
Please be advised: even though we have greatly improved our flood prevention infrastructure, if
the storm’s intensity remains on track for our region, we may be subject to dangerous flash
flooding conditions. The National Weather Service has issued a Flash Flood Watch in effect
Tuesday. Tropical Storm Force Winds between 40-50 mph are expected to arrive by Tuesday
afternoon, which could cause downed trees and power lines. We ask everyone to remain indoors
when possible, and to use extreme caution especially during the storm’s peak intensity.
To prepare for the hazardous weather, the city has deployed barricades to over 30 locations
citywide to divert traffic around identified flood prone areas. City crews have also been out
cleaning catch basins to maintain proper drainage.
We ask all residents as well as restaurant and business owners to remove or properly secure any
outdoor items that can exacerbate hazardous conditions during strong winds and flash flooding.
This includes garbage cans that often get tipped over by the wind and rain, resulting in scattered
debris and clogged drainage.
Lastly, drivers are reminded to avoid flooded roadways where water is often deeper and more
dangerous than it appears.
The city will continue to monitor the storm as it approaches and we will take all proper
precautions to maintain everyone’s safety. We thank you for your cooperation on this, and we
