The Law Department represents the City of Jersey City in all its legal affairs.  Its lawyers prepare all contracts and leases to which the City is a party, defends the City in litigation such as Civil Rights actions and tort claims, drafts ordinances and resolutions for the City Council, negotiates labor contracts, and brings affirmative lawsuits, such as environmental claims against polluters.   The Law Department also advises the Mayor and City Council on the legal implications of policy initiatives and helps to form these initiatives. 

The head of the Law Department is the Corporation Counsel who supervises 15 assistant corporation counsels, 14 municipal prosecutors and support staff.
