DIVISION OF SUSTAINABILITY

Under Mayor Fulop's administration, Jersey City has been a leader fight to protect our environment with bold and inclusive actions focusing on mitigating climate change, increasing resiliency, investing in a green economy, and ensuring equity across Jersey City’s communities. The Division of Sustainability works with City departments to advance policies, programs, and initiatives to advance the City's climate action goals.

In 2017, the Division's first initiative was the installation of electric vehicle charging stations across the City's 6 wards. Since then, the City has been electrifying the municipal fleet, removing 80 gasoline-powered vehicles and replacing them with over 37 electric vehicles. Most recently the City purchased 5 electric garbage trucks, making Jersey City the first municipality on the East Coast to do so.

From firehouses to the court house - city buildings are continually being upgraded using sustainable practices with solar panels and LED lights.

For the public, there are now 22 charging stations throughout Jersey City - each with 2 ports, so 44 EVs can charge at any given time and more are on the way, specifically to support our award-winning, public on-demand, car-sharing service, Via.

Equally important is the greening of our city.

In the last two years we've worked with residents to create new green and open spaces in areas that have been lacking them. Our Year of Open Space in 2022 saw pop-events  in under utilized sites. In 2021 We created Jersey City's first Climate and Energy Action Plan, where we built a framework for measuring, planning, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions and related effects from climate change. Energy efficiency upgrades were made to over 20 municipal buildings through the New Jersey Energy Savings Improvement Program (ESIP) and we continue to upgrade city buildings and the city fleet.

This year we are also focusing on expanding Jersey City's tree canopy. We'd like to invite you to apply to request for the city to plant a tree in your neighborhood. We've got the green thumb part of it covered! Please use the form below to request a tree.
