Recruitment  Since taking office in July of 2013, Mayor Fulop has hired more than 300 new police officers, bringing the department from a historic low of 779 officers to over 960 officers – its largest size in two decades.    Mayor Fulop has pledged to expand the department further to ultimately reach over 950 officers.

Civil Service Exam Update: The New Jersey Civil Service Commission plans to issue the next entry-level Law Enforcement Examination ( LEE ) announcement on July 1st, 2019.

 A free entry-level prep course is being offered by PACO.  The course is open to anyone interested in taking the upcoming Law Enforcement Examination.  These courses can range upwards of hundreds of dollars but will be offered for free to anyone applying for the Jersey City Police Department.  For more information click here.

The online application will be available July 1st, 2019 through August 31st, 2019. The actual test is tentatively scheduled for the fall season of 2019.

To be eligible to take the written civil service exam for Jersey City, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Must be between the ages of 18-35
  • Must be a U.S. citizen
  • Must possess a high school diploma/GED
  • Must possess an NJ Driver’s license at the time of training
  • Must be a resident of Jersey City

Applicants must:

  1. Be a U.S. citizen
  2. Be a resident of Jersey City
  3. Be 18-35 years of age
  4. Have a high school diploma or G.E.D.
  5. Be highly motivated
  6. Possess a valid NJ driver's license
  7. Pass a background investigation

Appointees will be required to successfully complete the New Jersey Training Commission mandated training program.
