Comprehensive Database Streamlines Access to Affordable Housing for Low- and Moderate-Income Households

JERSEY CITY, NJ — Mayor Steven M. Fulop joins the Department of Housing, Economic Development, and Commerce (HEDC), and the Division of Affordable Housing to launch the free, user-friendly Consolidated Affordable Housing Web Portal, AffordableHousingJC.com. The innovative portal will streamline access to affordable housing opportunities throughout Jersey City and simplify an otherwise convoluted process for people needing affordable housing.

Since Mayor Fulop took office, new policies — such as the Inclusionary Zoning Ordinance and the Affordable Housing Overlay Zone — have resulted in more approved units of affordable housing than ever before in Jersey City. This new 24/7 portal serves as a centralized hub where residents can search and instantly apply for affordable housing units in multiple buildings in one convenient location online.

“We are adding affordable housing opportunities at historic rates throughout Jersey City, and this portal is the next step in enhancing housing equity and accessibility,” said Mayor Fulop. “This portal is part of our ongoing commitment to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to live in safe, secure, and affordable homes.”

The Consolidated Affordable Housing Web Portal represents a significant leap forward in the city’s ongoing efforts to make housing more accessible to all. It facilitates renters’ property exploration and aids property managers in their marketing endeavors.

Mayor Fulop established the Division of Affordable Housing in 2019. Located in the heart of the community along Martin Luther King Drive, Gigi Gazón leads the division as Director. “The most helpful part of the portal is that you can apply directly to buildings with alerts for open application periods and find them much more easily. You can even apply to multiple buildings from that same portal.”

“Each affordable housing development has its own lottery system, which requires a person to hunt down the developer information, application periods, and eligibility requirements and then fill out a different application every time. It was a discouraging and arduous process. We set out to create this streamlined portal where you fill out one application to submit with alerts when applications are being accepted that fit the parameters you set,” said HEDC Director Annisia Cialone.

Key Features of the Consolidated Affordable Housing Web Portal:

• Centralized Listings: Residents can now view a comprehensive list of all affordable housing opportunities across Jersey City in one place, eliminating the need to navigate multiple websites or contact individual developers.
• Easy Application Process: The portal allows users to apply directly to multiple housing opportunities through a single application form, significantly reducing the time and effort required to secure affordable housing.
• User-Friendly Interface: Designed for improved simplicity and accessibility, the portal features an intuitive interface that is easy to navigate, ensuring that residents of all ages and technological abilities can use the platform effectively.
• Real-Time Updates: The portal provides up-to-date information on the availability of affordable housing units, helping residents stay informed about the latest opportunities.
• Support and Resources: In addition to listings and applications, the portal offers a wealth of resources and support services, including an affordable housing navigator to map out new and legacy housing, eligibility guidelines, frequently asked questions, required documentation, and contact information for housing assistance.

To ensure all low- and moderate-income households can take full advantage of the new portal, the city will host a series of free workshops and training sessions on how to use the platform. These public assistance sessions will cover topics such as creating an account, searching for housing, and completing applications. The following sessions are scheduled at the City Hall Annex, 4 Jackson Square:
• July 3 – 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
• July 8 – 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
• July 23 – 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Remote technical assistance sessions will also be available soon. Please visit the Consolidated Affordable Housing Web Portal for additional information or assistance finding affordable housing.

All properties and units listed on the portal are monitored to ensure compliance with affordable housing regulations and income limits.
