The Role of Enrichment in Summer

Research consistently shows that summer learning loss disproportionately affects low-income youth — setting back academic progress made during the school year. JC Rise counters this through intentional, joyful enrichment: not school replicated, but learning amplified through experience, creativity, and curiosity.

Principles of Effective Facilitation

    • Hook First — Begin every session with a question or challenge that sparks curiosity

    • Differentiate — Offer multiple entry points for campers at varying skill levels

    • Celebrate Effort, Not Just Outcomes — Model a growth mindset explicitly

    • Connect to Life — Link content to campers' real-world experiences

    • Reflect — End sessions with: What did we learn? What are we still wondering?

Activity Planning StandardEvery enrichment session must include: (1) a clear learning objective, (2) an engaging hook, (3) the core activity, (4) a reflection/debrief, and (5) a connection to a SEL competency.
