Mayor Solomon Appoints Jersey City Fire Department Deputy Chief Loren M. Hart as Acting Deputy Public Safety Director
Born and Raised in Jersey City, Hart Brings 23 Years of Dedicated Service to the Jersey City Fire Department
JERSEY CITY, NJ (March 6, 2026) — Mayor James Solomon today announced the appointment of Jersey City Fire Department Deputy Chief Loren M. Hart as Acting Deputy Public Safety Director for the City of Jersey City. Hart will serve under Acting Public Safety Director Anthony Ambrose, strengthening
the administration's leadership team as Jersey City continues to build a world-class public safety operation.
"Loren Hart is Jersey City, born and raised. He has spent 23 years protecting
his neighbors, his community, and his city as a member of the Jersey City
Fire Department. He knows these neighborhoods, he knows these firehouses,
and he knows what it takes to keep this city safe,” said Mayor James Solomon. “Deputy Chief Hart's experience, integrity, and lifelong dedication to Jersey City make him the ideal person to help lead our public safety operation alongside Director Ambrose. This appointment reflects our administration's commitment to elevating proven, homegrown leaders who
are invested in the future of this city."
Born and raised in Jersey City, Hart has dedicated his entire 23-year career to serving the people of his hometown through the Jersey City Fire Department— one of the busiest urban fire departments in the State of New Jersey. Hart rose through the ranks from Firefighter to Captain to Battalion Chief before being promoted to Deputy Fire Chief in 2022, a position he currently holds. Throughout his career, he has distinguished himself as a proven leader in emergency operations, incident command, and on-scene management,
earning a reputation for strategic decision-making and an unwavering commitment to firefighter safety and public service.
"I love Jersey City. This is my home — it's where I grew up, where I was raised, and where I've chosen to spend my career. For 23 years, I have had the honor of serving alongside the bravest men and women in the Jersey City Fire Department, and every single day, my mission has been the same: to protect the people of this city,” said Acting Public Safety Director Loren M. Hart. “ In this new role, I am committed to ensuring our fire department has the leadership and support it needs to remain a top-of-its-class department in the State of New Jersey. We will maintain the highest standards, continue to
lead the state, and make sure our firefighters have everything they need to do their jobs safely and effectively. I am honored by the trust Mayor Solomon and Director Ambrose have placed in me, and I will work every day to earn it."
As Deputy Fire Chief, Hart provides executive oversight of daily department operations, personnel, and emergency readiness across multiple battalions. He has led multi-alarm incident command operations, developed and
implemented department-wide policies and operational standards, managed departmental budgets and capital planning, and spearheaded initiatives to modernize training systems, integrate new technology, and improve firefighter health and safety programs.
Acting Public Safety Director Anthony Ambrose, the veteran law enforcement executive who previously served as Newark's Public Safety Director overseeing both police and fire operations, welcomed Hart's appointment.
"Deputy Chief Hart is exactly the kind of leader this department and this city need. He brings more than two decades of hands-on experience in fire operations and emergency management, and he carries the respect of the men and women who serve alongside him,” said
Acting Public Safety Director Anthony Ambrose. “What sets him apart is that he's a Jersey City
guy — he knows this city in his bones. I look forward to working with him as we continue to strengthen public safety across every division and ensure Jersey City is prepared for the challenges and opportunities ahead."
Hart's appointment is the latest in a series of public safety moves by the Solomon administration, which has prioritized protecting Jersey City residents from its first day in office. In January, Mayor Solomon announced the hiring of 30 new police officers, the reestablishment of the Traffic Enforcement Division, and a recommitment to Vision Zero. The appointment
of Deputy Chief Hart further signals the administration's focus on strengthening fire department leadership and building a unified, effective public safety structure for the city.
Hart assumes his new role effective immediately.
