JERSEY CITY FILES TO STOP THE CLOSURE OF CHRIST HOSPITAL

City files for an injunctive relief to prevent Hudson Regional Health from acting outside of state law.

JERSEY CITY, NJ (March 14, 2026) – At the direction of Mayor James Solomon, the City of Jersey City’s Corporation Counsel Sarah M. Levine is filing today an emergency injunction seeking to prevent Hudson Regional Health (HRH) from closing Heights University Hospital, previously known as Christ Hospital, this evening. Mayor Solomon issued the following statement:

“HRH’s abrupt closure of Christ Hospital contradicts not only their own promises to the Heights community, but also their legal obligations under State law. HRH has methodically degraded the services of the hospital, finally leaving only its emergency department open. Their failure isn’t one of financial poverty, but intentional, strategic harm that threatens the lives of Jersey City Heights residents.

“At every stop on the way to today, HRH failed to follow basic rules required by state law to close a hospital. Unfortunately, the allowed penalties are so small as to count as the cost of doing business. Further, in recent days HRH sought to negotiate a deal to keep the hospital open long-term if the City agreed to fast track the process to begin a luxury residential development project on the site. Jersey City does not negotiate with lives of our residents, while their offer demonstrated the hospital could remain open.

Given these facts, I directed the City’s Corporation Counsel to file in the New Jersey Superior Court in Hudson County to grant an Order of Show Cause and a preliminary injunction to keep the hospital open until it complies with its statutory and regulatory obligations.”

The City of Jersey City is filing under the State’s obligation under N.J.S.A. 26:2H-1 to provide continuous access to essential health services regarding HRH’s failure to follow steps required to close a hospital laid out in N.J.A.C. § 8:33-3.2(b).
