Positive Behavior Support Philosophy

JC Rise staff use Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) — a proactive, relationship-based approach that teaches expected behaviors rather than simply punishing unwanted ones.

The JC Rise RISE Behavior Framework

  • R — Respect: Treat yourself, others, and the environment with care

  • I — Integrity: Do the right thing, even when no one is watching

  • S — Safety: Keep yourself and others physically and emotionally safe

  • E — Excellence: Give your best effort in everything you do

Post these expectations visibly at your site. Recognize campers who demonstrate RISE behaviors publicly and specifically — not just generically ("Good job!") but explicitly ("I noticed you helped Jaylen when he dropped his supplies — that's Respect and Excellence at the same time.").

Behavior Response Continuum & Restorative Practices

Behavior Level

Staff Response

Minor (off-task, low-level)

Redirect, proximity, private reminder

Moderate (repeated or conflict)

Loss of privilege, parent notification, documentation

Serious (physical altercation)

Immediate removal, Site Director involved, Incident Report

Crisis (self-harm, weapon)

Call 911, secure all campers, follow emergency protocol

Restorative Questions (use after any conflict):

  • What happened from your perspective?

  • Who has been affected and how?

  • What do you think needs to happen to make this right?

  • How can I support you in moving forward?
