The Division of Community Health & Wellness serves as the chief Health Strategist for Jersey City. In response to the diverse and ever-growing needs of the city, where over 70 languages are spoken, the division utilizes public health data to drive its education efforts. In its mission to create a city where residents are healthy, well and thriving, multilingual health educators are assigned to address the city's most emerging health needs. Data has shown that in Wards A & F the most urgent health priorities are mental health and violence. Health educators have now shifted their focus and resources to align with those health needs. Building and strengthening community partnerships and data-informed health strategies result in creating a stronger, healthier Jersey City.

Extreme Cold Weather #HealthierJC Safety Alert

Dangerously cold temperatures are impacting the area. Jersey City residents are urged to take precautions to prevent cold-related illnesses such as hypothermia and frostbite.

  • Limit Exposure & Stay Warm: Avoid unnecessary outdoor activity. Dress in layers, cover exposed skin, wear insulated footwear, and keep homes safely heated.
  • Health Risks: Watch for signs of hypothermia (shivering, confusion, slurred speech) and frostbite (numbness, pale or waxy skin). Seek medical help immediately if symptoms appear.
  • Check on Others: Look in on older adults, people with disabilities, individuals with chronic conditions, and neighbors without adequate heat. Never leave children, older adults, or pets unattended in cold conditions.
  • Use Heaters Safely: Follow space heater instructions, keep them away from flammable materials, and never use ovens, grills, or generators indoors. Ensure smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are working.
  • Be Prepared: Keep food, water, medications, blankets, and flashlights on hand. Charge devices in case of power outages. If indoor temperatures become unsafe, visit a warming center or shelter.
  • Pet Safety: Bring pets indoors when possible and ensure outdoor animals have warm shelter, food, and unfrozen water.
