The National Weather Service issued a Winter Storm Watch for Sunday into Monday morning. The forecast indicates that the storm will hit closer to the coast than previously predicted - currently they estimate between 12 and 18in of snowfall for Jersey City.

We will continue to update this page with information and resources as the situation develops.

Basic Safety Tips

Before the Storm

  • Charge all electronic devices and have backup power sources or flashlights ready
  • Clear storm drains near your property
  • Bring in outdoor furniture and secure loose items
  • Have snow removal equipment and approved de-icing materials on hand

During the Storm

  • Avoid all non-essential travel so emergency vehicles and plow crews can do their jobs safely
  • Do not use candles, kerosene heaters, gas-powered generators, or gas grills indoors — these can cause carbon monoxide poisoning or fire
  • Do not plug space heaters into extension cords. Plug them directly into the wall.
  • If you lose power and need heating assistance, call the Resident Response Center at (201) 547-4900
  • Check on elderly neighbors or anyone who may need assistance

After the Storm

  • Do not shovel snow into the street after it has been plowed — this creates dangerous ice conditions
  • Do not dump snow or ice into storm sewers
  • Snow should be banked and piled within 3 feet of the curb

Snow Removal Requirements

All property owners, occupants, and anyone in charge of a property are responsible for keeping sidewalks, curbs, and gutters clear of snow and ice.

Residential Properties & Vacant Lots

You must clear snow and ice from all sidewalks, curbs, and gutters abutting your property within 8 hours after snow stops falling. If the snowfall ends during the night, removal must be completed no later than 8 hours after sunrise.

The cleared path must be at least 48 inches (4 feet) wide.

Commercial Properties & Non-Residential Structures

You must clear snow and ice from all sidewalks and gutters abutting your property within 4 hours after snow stops falling. If the snowfall ends during the night, removal must be completed no later than 4 hours after sunrise.

The cleared path must be at least 48 inches (4 feet) wide.

Corner Properties

If your property faces more than one street, you are also required to clear all corner ramps, adjacent gutters, and crosswalks up to the plow line, within the same timeframes listed above.

Ice Removal — Ongoing Responsibility

Your responsibility doesn't end after the initial clearing. Property owners and occupants must continuously monitor sidewalks abutting their property to ensure they remain free of ice, even after the first clearing.

Approved De-Icing Materials

Rock salt is prohibited. If snow or ice has hardened and cannot be safely removed, use only the following approved de-icing chemicals:

  • Calcium chloride
  • Calcium magnesium acetate
  • Magnesium chloride
  • Potassium acetate
  • Potassium chloride
  • Urea

What Happens If You Don't Comply

If snow is not removed within 12 hours of daylight after snowfall, the City may issue a summonses and fine.

Public Parking Lots

During the storm, the city and local partners are making the following parking lots available to residents who want to move their car off the street for the duration of the storm.

Lots open at 2pm on Sunday, February 21, 2026.
